Fraction Calculator
Enter two fractions, mixed numbers or decimals, choose an operation and get the answer as a simplified fraction, a mixed number and a decimal, with the steps written out. You can also reduce a single fraction to lowest terms. Numbers can be as large as you like, because the calculation is exact and never rounds. Everything runs in your browser.
Steps
- Find a common denominator: the least common multiple of 2 and 3 is 6.
- Rewrite the fractions: 3/6 + 2/6.
- Combine: 3 + 2 = 5, giving 5/6.
- The fraction 5/6 is already in lowest terms.

Math & MoneyAbout the Fraction Calculator
The fraction calculator works with exact whole numbers, so 1/3 + 1/6 is exactly 1/2 and nothing is lost to rounding. You can type a fraction such as 3/4, a mixed number such as 2 1/2, a decimal such as 0.75 or a whole number, and negative values with a minus sign. To add or subtract, the tool finds the least common multiple of the two denominators, rewrites both fractions over it and combines the numerators. To multiply, it multiplies the numerators and the denominators. To divide, it multiplies by the flipped second fraction. Every result is reduced by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor. The decimal is found by long division, and a digit pattern that repeats is shown in brackets, so 1/6 is 0.1(6) and 1/7 is 0.(142857). If the repeating part is longer than 400 digits, the tool shows the first digits and says so. A mixed number must have a fraction part smaller than its denominator, so 1 5/2 is rejected instead of guessed. A zero denominator and a division by zero are reported as errors. The results were compared with the Fraction type of Python on about 40,000 random calculations and match. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How do you add fractions with different denominators?▾
Find a common denominator, usually the least common multiple of the two denominators, rewrite each fraction over it, then add the numerators and keep the denominator. For 1/2 + 1/3 the common denominator is 6, so you add 3/6 + 2/6 and get 5/6.
How do you simplify a fraction?▾
Divide the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor. For 18/24 the greatest common divisor is 6, so the fraction becomes 3/4. If the greatest common divisor is 1, the fraction is already in lowest terms.
How do you divide fractions?▾
Multiply the first fraction by the flipped second fraction. So 1/2 divided by 1/4 is 1/2 times 4/1, which is 4/2, or 2. Dividing by a fraction whose numerator is zero is not possible.
How do I enter a mixed number?▾
Type the whole part, a space, then the fraction, as in 2 1/2. Put the minus sign at the start for a negative value, as in -2 1/2, which means minus two and a half. The fraction part must be smaller than its denominator.
What does 0.1(6) mean?▾
The digits in brackets repeat forever. So 0.1(6) is 0.16666..., which is 1/6, and 0.(142857) is 0.142857142857..., which is 1/7.
