It provides two counts side by side: total characters (with spaces) and characters without spaces. The "with spaces" count is what most platforms like Twitter/X (280 chars), SMS (160 chars), and Google meta descriptions (~155 chars) enforce. The "without spaces" count is useful for languages like Chinese or Japanese where spaces are not word separators. Line breaks on Windows (\r\n) count as two characters; on Mac/Linux (\n) they count as one — the tool counts exactly what your system provides. All computation happens locally in your browser, so even confidential drafts are safe to check.
Does it count spaces as characters?▾
Yes — the "total characters" count includes every character: letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation, and line breaks. The "without spaces" count removes all whitespace (spaces, tabs, and newlines).
How are line breaks counted?▾
Each line break character counts as one character in the total. On Windows, a line break may be two characters (\r\n), depending on how the text was created.
