Character Limit Checker

Pick a platform, paste your text, and see at a glance how many characters you have used, how many remain, and when you are over the limit. The presets cover the limits that matter most for SEO and social media, from 60-character meta titles to 2,200-character Instagram captions, and you can set your own custom limit.

Google truncates titles by pixel width, which is roughly 60 characters. Wide letters like W and M use more space.

About the Character Limit Checker

The Character Limit Checker compares your text with the length limit of the field you are writing for. The presets include meta titles (about 60 characters) and meta descriptions (about 160), X posts (280), Instagram captions (2,200) and bios (150), LinkedIn posts (3,000), YouTube titles (100), Google Ads headlines (30) and descriptions (90), and SMS messages. A progress bar turns amber near the limit and red when you go over, and the tool reports exactly how many characters remain or how many to cut. Each emoji or special symbol is counted as one character. For SEO fields, remember that Google truncates titles and descriptions by pixel width rather than by character count, so the numbers are a safe guideline rather than a guarantee. In SMS mode the tool detects whether your message fits the standard GSM-7 character set or needs Unicode, and shows how many message segments it will use, because Unicode messages hold fewer characters per segment. Platform limits change from time to time, so confirm important limits on the platform itself. Your text stays in your browser.

How long should a meta title and meta description be?▾

A meta title of about 60 characters and a meta description of about 150 to 160 characters usually display in full on Google. Truncation depends on pixel width, so titles with wide letters can be cut off sooner. Staying a little under the limit is the safest approach.

Why does my SMS count as more than one segment?▾

A single SMS holds 160 characters in the standard GSM-7 character set, or only 70 if the message contains any character outside it, such as an emoji. Longer messages are split into segments of 153 or 67 characters.

Does the X limit count links and emoji the same way?▾

This tool counts plain characters. X can count links as a fixed length and some characters, such as emoji and certain scripts, as more than one, so the real count on X can differ slightly.
