Unix Timestamp & Epoch Converter

Convert Unix epoch timestamps to human-readable calendar dates and vice-versa in real time. The converter automatically detects seconds versus milliseconds by digit length, displays both UTC and local timezone equivalents, and provides a one-click 'Now' button for current system time.

About the Unix Timestamp & Epoch Converter

Unix time (also known as Epoch time or POSIX time) measures time by tracking the number of seconds that have elapsed since the Unix epoch: 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970, excluding leap seconds. It is the universal standard for timestamping in operating systems, databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB), log files, JWT expiration tokens, and REST APIs. Backend systems typically store timestamps as 10-digit integers (seconds), while JavaScript, Java, and modern web environments use 13-digit integers (milliseconds). This tool seamlessly handles both formats through automatic digit-count detection (timestamps with 11 or fewer digits are interpreted as seconds, while 12 or more digits are interpreted as milliseconds). It computes the ISO 8601 string, full UTC format, localized system timezone format, day-of-week, day of year, and relative time (e.g. '3 hours ago' or 'in 2 days'). All temporal conversions use native JavaScript Date methods without external network latency.

How does the tool distinguish between seconds and milliseconds?▾

The tool auto-detects based on digit length. Standard Unix timestamps in seconds have 10 digits (e.g. 1700000000), while millisecond timestamps have 13 digits (e.g. 1700000000000). The converter scales accordingly.

What is the Year 2038 problem?▾

On January 19, 2038, 32-bit signed integers will overflow because they exceed 2,147,483,647 seconds. Modern 64-bit systems and JavaScript's 64-bit floating-point numbers handle dates billions of years into the future without issue.

Does converting timestamps depend on my computer's clock?▾

Converting an existing timestamp to UTC is purely mathematical and absolute. However, converting to 'Local Time' uses your operating system's configured timezone and daylight saving settings.
