About the Title Case Converter

The Title Case Converter applies the capitalization rules used by the major style guides. In AP and APA mode, articles, coordinating conjunctions, and prepositions of three letters or fewer stay lowercase, and every word of four letters or more is capitalized. In Chicago and MLA mode, all prepositions stay lowercase regardless of length, so "between" and "through" are not capitalized in the middle of a title. A third mode capitalizes every word with no exceptions. In every mode the first word, the last word, and the first word after a colon are capitalized, hyphenated compounds such as "State-of-the-Art" are handled part by part, and words that already contain capital letters, such as NASA or iPhone, are left exactly as you typed them. If an entire line is typed in capitals, it is lowercased first so it can be converted properly. Each line is converted on its own, so you can paste a whole list of headlines at once. Style guides have edge cases, so check the result against your guide when a title must be exact. All processing happens in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded.

What is the difference between AP, APA, Chicago, and MLA title case?▾

AP and APA lowercase articles, coordinating conjunctions, and prepositions of three letters or fewer, and capitalize words of four letters or more. Chicago and MLA lowercase every preposition regardless of length, so "between" or "through" stays lowercase inside a title. The first and last words are always capitalized in all of them.

Is the first word after a colon capitalized?▾

Yes. The first word, the last word, and the first word after a colon are always capitalized, even when they are small words like "a" or "to".

Will it change acronyms or brand names like NASA and iPhone?▾

No. Words that are all capitals or that have capital letters inside them are left as typed. The exception is a line typed entirely in capitals, which is lowercased first so it can be converted into proper title case.
