Mean, Median and Mode Calculator
Paste or type a list of numbers, separated by spaces, commas or line breaks, and see the mean, median, mode, range, quartiles, variance and standard deviation at once. Both the population and the sample versions of variance and standard deviation are shown. The arithmetic is exact, so decimals such as 0.1 and 0.2 add to 0.3. Everything runs in your browser.

Math & MoneyAbout the Mean, Median and Mode Calculator
The Mean, Median and Mode Calculator describes a list of numbers. The mean is the sum divided by the count, the median is the middle number of the sorted list (or the average of the two middle numbers when the count is even), and the mode is the number that appears most often. If several numbers tie for most often, they are all listed, and if every number appears once there is no mode. The range is the largest minus the smallest. The quartiles are the medians of the lower and upper halves of the sorted list, leaving out the middle number when the count is odd, and the interquartile range is Q3 minus Q1. Other programs use other quartile methods, so a spreadsheet may give slightly different values. Variance is the average squared distance from the mean, and the standard deviation is its square root. The population version divides by n and the sample version divides by n minus 1, which is what to use when the numbers are a sample of a larger group. The tool reads every number as an exact decimal and sums whole numbers, so there is no floating point error, and rounds once at the end, half away from zero, to the number of decimal places you choose. On 20,000 random lists the results matched Python's exact fraction arithmetic in every statistic. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How do I find the mean, median and mode?▾
The mean is the sum of the numbers divided by how many there are. For the median, sort the numbers and take the middle one, or the average of the middle two if there is an even count. The mode is the number that appears most often. Paste your list into the tool and it gives all three at once.
What is the difference between sample and population standard deviation?▾
Both measure how spread out the numbers are. The population version divides by n and is used when your numbers are the whole group. The sample version divides by n minus 1 and is used when they are a sample drawn from a larger group, which makes the estimate slightly larger. The tool shows both.
Can a list have more than one mode?▾
Yes. If two or more numbers tie for the highest count, they are all modes. If every number appears only once, there is no mode, and the tool says so.
How are the quartiles calculated?▾
The tool sorts the numbers, splits them into a lower and an upper half, leaving out the middle number when the count is odd, and takes the median of each half. Spreadsheets and statistics packages may use other methods, so their quartiles can differ a little for the same list.
Is my data uploaded?▾
No. The calculation runs in your browser, and the numbers you enter are not sent anywhere or stored.
