Text ExtractionAbout the Number to Words Converter
The number to words converter reads the digits you type and spells them out in English. Whole numbers use the short scale, so a billion is a thousand million, up to vigintillion for 66 digits. Tens and units are joined with a hyphen, as in thirty-four. The American style leaves out "and" (one hundred five) and the British style puts it after the hundreds and before a last group under 100 (one hundred and five, one thousand and one). In the Indian system the groups after the first three digits are pairs, so 100,000 is one lakh and 10,000,000 is one crore, and the tool supports up to 13 digits there. A decimal point is read as point, followed by each digit on its own, so 2.50 is two point five zero. Ordinals change only the last word, so 21 becomes twenty-first and 100 becomes one hundredth. Currency mode names the dollars, euros, pounds or rupees and the cents, pence or paise, and check mode writes the cents as a fraction over 100, as in one thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars. Amounts with more than two decimals are rounded half up to the cent and the tool tells you. Commas are accepted only when they group the digits in threes, so a European 1.234,56 is rejected instead of being misread. The spelling was compared with a widely used Python library on tens of thousands of numbers, including every number up to 3,000. Nothing you type is uploaded.
How do I write a number in words?▾
Split it into groups of three digits from the right, say each group as hundreds, tens and units, and add the scale word: thousand, million, billion and so on. So 1,234,567 is one million, two hundred thirty-four thousand, five hundred sixty-seven. Join tens and units with a hyphen when they are 21 to 99, as in forty-two.
Do I write "and" in numbers like 105?▾
It depends on the style. American style leaves it out: one hundred five. British style adds it after the hundreds: one hundred and five. Both are in common use, so choose the one your reader expects.
How do I write the amount on a check?▾
Write the whole dollars in words, then the cents as a fraction over 100, then the currency. For 1,234.56 that is one thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars. Choose Check amount in the tool to get that line. Check the words against the number in the box before you sign, because the two must agree.
What are lakh and crore?▾
They are units of the Indian numbering system. A lakh is 100,000 and a crore is 10,000,000, and the digits are grouped as 12,34,56,789 instead of 123,456,789. Choose the Indian numbering option and 12,345,678 is read as one crore twenty-three lakh forty-five thousand six hundred seventy-eight.
