Markdown Table Generator

Paste cells copied from Excel or Google Sheets, or text separated by commas, semicolons or pipes, and get a ready-to-use Markdown table. Choose the alignment of each column, tidy the spacing so the columns line up, and copy the result into a README, a wiki or a note. Everything runs in your browser.

Read 4 rows and 3 columns, separated by commas.

The output is GitHub Flavored Markdown, which GitHub, GitLab, Reddit, Notion, Obsidian and most Markdown editors read. A pipe inside a cell is written as \| and a line break inside a cell as
, because every table row has to stay on one line. Nothing you paste is uploaded.

About the Markdown Table Generator

A Markdown table is a header row, a delimiter row of hyphens, and then the body rows, with cells separated by pipes. A colon in the delimiter row sets the alignment: a colon on the left means left aligned, on the right means right aligned and on both sides means centered. The format is part of GitHub Flavored Markdown, which GitHub, GitLab, Reddit, Notion and Obsidian all read. Writing one by hand is tedious, so paste your data instead. Cells copied from a spreadsheet arrive tab separated, and the tool detects that, as well as commas, semicolons and pipes. Quoted CSV fields work: a field in quotes can hold a comma, a doubled quote or even a line break. A pipe inside a cell would break the row, so the tool writes it as \| and turns a line break into
, which keeps every row on one line. If you already have a Markdown table, paste it back in to change its alignment or tidy its spacing. Padding the cells with spaces makes the source line up in a text editor but does not change how the table renders. Short rows are filled with empty cells so every row has the same number of columns. Nothing you paste is uploaded.

How do I make a table in Markdown?▾

Write a header row with cells between pipes, then a delimiter row of three or more hyphens in each column, then your body rows. For example: | Name | Qty |, then | --- | --- |, then | Apple | 3 |. Or paste your data into this tool and copy the result.

How do I convert a spreadsheet or CSV to a Markdown table?▾

Copy the cells in Excel or Google Sheets and paste them into the box. They arrive tab separated and are detected automatically. For a CSV file, open it in a text editor, copy the text and paste it. The first row becomes the header unless you untick that option.

How do I align columns in a Markdown table?▾

Put a colon in the delimiter row: :--- for left, ---: for right and :---: for center. The tool has a menu for each column and writes the colons for you. Without a colon the alignment is the renderer's default, usually left.

How do I put a pipe or a line break inside a cell?▾

A pipe is written as \| so it is not read as a column break, and a line break is written as
, because each table row must stay on one line. The tool does both automatically.

Does the padding change how the table looks?▾

No. Extra spaces only make the plain text line up so it is easier to read and edit. Every Markdown renderer ignores them and shows the same table.
