Typing Speed Test
Type the text shown and the clock starts with your first key. Correct letters turn green and mistakes turn red as you go. When you finish, or when the time you chose is up, you get your net speed in words per minute, your gross speed, your accuracy, the number of words typed correctly and your keystroke accuracy, which counts mistakes you fixed too. Press New text for a different set of common words. Everything runs in your browser.

Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where by convention a word is five characters, counting letters, spaces and punctuation. Gross speed divides all the characters you typed by five and by the minutes taken. Net speed counts only the correct characters, so mistakes left in the text lower it. Accuracy is the share of typed characters that match the text, and keystroke accuracy also counts mistakes you fixed with backspace. The text is made of common English words, a new set comes with each press of New text, and pasting is turned off. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Analysis & CountingAbout the Typing Speed Test
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, and by convention a word is five characters, counting letters, spaces and punctuation, so that long and short words are treated alike. Gross speed is the characters you typed divided by five and by the minutes taken. Net speed counts only the correct characters, so a mistake left in the text lowers it: typing 300 characters in 60 seconds is 60 words per minute, and if 10 of those characters are wrong, the net speed is 58. Accuracy is the share of typed characters that match the text. Keystroke accuracy is stricter, because it also counts mistakes you corrected with backspace, which still cost you time. The timer starts on your first keystroke, not when the page loads, so reading the text first costs nothing. Pasting is turned off so that the result reflects real typing. The text is drawn from a list of common English words, with no word repeated twice in a row, using your browser's random number generator, and a different text is easy to get. Your speed varies from test to test with the text, your warm-up and fatigue, so judge it over several attempts. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
How is typing speed calculated?▾
Words per minute is the number of characters typed divided by five, divided by the minutes taken. Net speed uses only the correct characters. Five characters counts as one word, whatever the actual word lengths are.
What is a good typing speed?▾
It depends on the job and the person. Many people type at a speed they find comfortable somewhere in a broad range, and accuracy matters as much as speed, since fixing mistakes costs time. Track your own progress over several attempts.
What is the difference between gross and net speed?▾
Gross speed counts every character you typed, including wrong ones. Net speed counts only the correct characters, so it is the more honest number. The gap between them shows how much mistakes cost you.
Why does the test start when I press a key?▾
So that reading the text and getting ready do not count against you. The clock starts with your first keystroke and stops when you finish the text or the time runs out.
Is what I type uploaded?▾
No. The test runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
