Cooking Converter

Choose an ingredient, type an amount and pick the units, and the converter turns cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces and millilitres into grams, ounces and pounds, or the other way round. A table beneath lists the usual measures for that ingredient, from a cup down to a teaspoon. If your ingredient is not on the list you can enter its grams per cup. Everything runs in your browser.

Cups and spoons measure volume, while grams and ounces measure weight, so the same cup holds a different weight of flour, sugar or butter. The densities here are averages from the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart, scaled to one US cup (236.6 ml). Water is set at 1 g per ml (237 g per cup), while the chart rounds milk, cream and yogurt to 8 ounces (227 g) per cup. How you fill the cup changes the weight a lot: flour that is scooped can weigh noticeably more than flour that is spooned and leveled. For baking, weighing in grams is the most reliable. You can type fractions such as 1/2 or 1 1/2. Everything runs in your browser.

About the Cooking Converter

Cups and spoons measure volume, while grams and ounces measure weight, so there is no single conversion between them. A cup of flour is much lighter than a cup of sugar or honey. The converter turns a volume into millilitres, multiplies by the density of the ingredient to get grams, and then converts to the unit you chose. The densities come from the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart, scaled to one US cup of 236.6 ml, except water, which is set at 1 g per ml. A cup of all-purpose flour is 120 g, so 250 g of flour is about 2.08 cups. A cup of granulated sugar is 198 g, a cup of butter is 226 g and a tablespoon of honey is 21 g. Conversions between two volumes, such as cups to millilitres, or two weights, such as ounces to grams, do not depend on the ingredient at all. The figures are averages. How you fill a cup changes its weight, and flour that is scooped weighs noticeably more than flour that is spooned and leveled, so for baking it is more reliable to weigh ingredients on a scale. You can type fractions such as 1/2 or 1 1/2.

How many grams are in a cup of flour?▾

About 120 g for all-purpose flour, from the King Arthur chart. Other flours differ: whole wheat is 113 g and almond flour is 96 g.

How many grams are in a cup of sugar?▾

Granulated sugar is about 198 g per US cup, packed brown sugar is about 213 g and confectioners sugar is about 113 g.

Why does a cup weigh different amounts for different ingredients?▾

A cup measures volume, and ingredients differ in density. A cup of honey is far heavier than a cup of flour.

Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?▾

No. A US cup is about 236.6 ml and a metric cup is 250 ml. The converter has both.

Is my data uploaded?▾

No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
