Tip Calculator
Enter the bill and a tip percent to see the tip and the total. Choose whether the tip is worked out on the bill before tax or on the bill plus tax, split the total between any number of people, and round up to a whole amount if you want a tidy figure. When the total cannot be divided evenly, the tool tells you who pays the extra cent, so the shares always add up. Everything runs in your browser.

Math & MoneyAbout the Tip Calculator
The tip calculator multiplies the amount you choose by the tip percent and rounds to the cent, with halves rounding up. You can base the tip on the bill before tax or on the bill plus tax, and you can enter the tax as an amount. The total is the bill plus tax plus tip. When you split between people, the total is divided in whole cents. If it does not divide evenly, the first few people pay one cent more and the rest pay the lower amount, so the shares add up to the total exactly instead of being off by a cent or two. The rounding choices change the tip to reach a whole number: rounding the total up makes the total a whole amount, and rounding each share up makes every person's share whole. In both cases the tip grows to cover the difference, and the tool shows the tip as a percent of the amount it was based on, so you can see how much more than your chosen percent you are leaving. Tipping customs differ between countries, and so does what is included in a bill, so use the percent that fits your situation. The calculations were compared with the Decimal type of Python on 40,000 random bills, with tax, every base and every rounding choice, and match, and the shares added up in every case. How do I calculate a tip?▾
Multiply the bill by the tip percent as a decimal. An 18% tip on 84.50 is 84.50 times 0.18, which is 15.21. Add it to the bill for the total, 99.71.
Should the tip be on the bill before or after tax?▾
Both are used. The tool lets you pick the bill before tax or the bill plus tax, so you can see the difference.
How do I split a bill with a tip evenly?▾
Add the tip to the bill and divide the total by the number of people. If it does not divide into whole cents, a few people pay one cent more, and the tool shows how many pay each amount so the shares add up to the total.
What does rounding up do to the tip?▾
It raises the tip so that the total, or each person's share, is a whole amount. On 84.50 with an 18% tip, rounding the total up changes the tip from 15.21 to 15.50, which is 18.34% of the bill.
