Sales Tax Calculator

Enter a price and a sales tax rate to see the tax and the total. Or enter a total that already includes tax and take the tax out to find the price before tax. Type your own rate or tap a common one, and copy any result. The tax is rounded to the cent and the three amounts always add up. Everything runs in your browser.

Enter the combined rate that applies where you buy: state, county and city rates add up.

About the Sales Tax Calculator

To add sales tax, the calculator multiplies the price by the rate and rounds the tax to the cent, with halves rounding up, so 19.99 at 8.875% has 1.77 of tax and a total of 21.76. To take tax out of a total, it divides the total by one plus the rate to get the price before tax, rounds that to the cent, and treats what is left as the tax. The tax and the price before tax therefore always add up to the total you entered. The rate is yours to type, because sales tax differs by state, county and city, and the combined rate is what applies at the till. The tool does not look up rates and does not know what is taxable where you shop: food, clothing and services are treated differently in different places. A shop may also round on each item or on the whole receipt, so a receipt can differ from this tool by a cent or two. The arithmetic was checked on 20,000 random amounts and rates: the price before tax plus the tax always equalled the total, and taking the tax out of a total that had tax added gave the original price back to within a cent. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How do I calculate sales tax?▾

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal. At 8.25%, a price of 100 has 100 times 0.0825, which is 8.25 of tax, so the total is 108.25.

How do I find the price before tax from a total?▾

Divide the total by one plus the rate as a decimal. For a total of 108.25 at 8.25%, divide by 1.0825 to get 100.00. The difference, 8.25, is the tax. The tool does this when you choose to take the tax out.

What is my sales tax rate?▾

It is the combined rate for the place you buy in. It can include a state rate and county and city rates. Check your state or local tax authority, or your receipt, for the exact figure. The tool does not look rates up.

Why does my receipt differ by a cent?▾

Shops may round the tax on each item, or on the whole bill, and some round in other ways. The tool rounds the tax on the amount you enter to the nearest cent. A receipt with many items can therefore differ slightly.

Is my data uploaded?▾

No. The calculation runs in your browser, and what you type is not sent anywhere or stored.
