Math & MoneyAbout the VAT Calculator
To add VAT, the calculator multiplies the net price by the rate and rounds the VAT to the cent, with halves rounding up. So 100.00 at 20% gives 20.00 of VAT and a gross price of 120.00. To remove VAT from a gross price, it divides by one plus the rate to get the net price, rounds that to the cent, and takes what is left as the VAT, so a gross price of 100.00 at 20% has a net price of 83.33 and VAT of 16.67. The net price and the VAT therefore always add up to the gross price. VAT rates differ between countries, and many countries have a standard rate and one or more reduced rates for particular goods and services, so the rate is yours to type. The tool does not look rates up or decide which rate applies to what you sell. Invoices may also round the VAT per line or on the invoice total, depending on the rules that apply, so check the rule for your invoices. The arithmetic was checked on 20,000 random amounts and rates, and the net price plus the VAT always equalled the gross price. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How do I calculate VAT?▾
Multiply the net price by the VAT rate as a decimal. At 20%, a net price of 100 has 100 times 0.20, which is 20.00 of VAT, so the gross price is 120.00.
How do I take VAT out of a price?▾
Divide the gross price by one plus the rate as a decimal. For 100.00 at 20%, divide by 1.20 to get a net price of 83.33. The difference, 16.67, is the VAT. Taking 20% off 100 would give a different, wrong answer.
What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?▾
The arithmetic of adding or removing the tax is the same. VAT is charged at each stage of supply, and businesses can generally reclaim the VAT they paid on their purchases, so it falls on the final customer. Sales tax is collected on the sale to the final customer. The rules differ by country.
What VAT rate should I use?▾
The rate for your country and for the kind of goods or services. Many countries have a standard rate and reduced rates. Check your tax authority for the current figures, because the tool does not look rates up.
