Video Resolution Calculator
Pick an aspect ratio, such as 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 1:1 or 2.39:1, and the calculator lists the width and height at each standard step from 144p to 8K, with the megapixel count and how far each size is from the exact ratio. Choose whether the sides must be even or a multiple of 4, 8 or 16 for your encoder. A second table lists every whole-pixel size that has exactly your ratio, between a smallest and a largest side that you set. Everything runs in your browser.

Video sizes are named by the shorter side, so 1080p means 1080 pixels on the short side whether the frame is 1920 x 1080 or 1080 x 1920. At 16:9 the long side is exact for most steps, but 480p would be 853.33 pixels wide, so it is rounded to the nearest multiple you choose and the table shows the small ratio error. Many video codecs, including H.264 with the common 4:2:0 color format, need even sides, and some encoders work in blocks of 8 or 16, so a multiple of 16 avoids padding inside the encoder. The second table lists the sizes that need no rounding at all. Everything runs in your browser.

Video sizes are named by the shorter side, so 1080p means 1080 pixels on the short side whether the frame is 1920 x 1080 or 1080 x 1920. For a ratio, the long side is the short side times the ratio, rounded to the multiple you choose. At 16:9 this gives 1280 x 720 for 720p, 1920 x 1080 for 1080p, 3840 x 2160 for 4K UHD and 7680 x 4320 for 8K UHD, all exact. 480p would be 853.33 pixels wide, so it becomes 854 x 480 with even sides (0.078% off the exact ratio) or 848 x 480 as a multiple of 16. A 9:16 vertical video at 1080p is 1080 x 1920, a 4:3 video at 480p is 640 x 480, and a 21:9 ratio taken as 7:3 gives 2520 x 1080. Many video codecs, including H.264 with the common 4:2:0 color format, need even sides, and some encoders work in blocks of 16 pixels, so a multiple of 16 avoids padding inside the encoder. The second table helps when you want no rounding at all: for 16:9 only multiples of 16 x 9 are exact, such as 640 x 360 or 1280 x 720, and with sides limited to a multiple of 8 the sizes between 240 and 3840 start at 512 x 288, 640 x 360 and 768 x 432.
What does 1080p mean?▾
It means 1080 pixels on the shorter side of the frame. At 16:9 that is 1920 x 1080, and for a vertical 9:16 video it is 1080 x 1920.
Why is 480p 854 x 480 and not 853 x 480?▾
At 16:9 the width would be 853.33 pixels. Rounding to 853 gives an odd width, which many encoders reject, so 854 is the nearest even width. It is 0.078% off the exact ratio.
What size is 4K?▾
4K UHD at 16:9 is 3840 x 2160. Some cinema standards use 4096 pixels across, which is a different aspect ratio, so type your own ratio if you work with those.
Which sizes have exactly 16:9?▾
Only multiples of 16 x 9: 160 x 90, 320 x 180, 640 x 360, 1280 x 720, 1920 x 1080 and so on. The exact-size table lists them for any ratio.
