Anagram Checker

Type two words or phrases to see whether they are anagrams, with a letter-by-letter count that shows exactly where they differ. Or paste a list of words and find the groups that are anagrams of each other. You choose whether case, spaces, punctuation and accents count. Everything runs in your browser.

Two texts are anagrams when they use exactly the same letters the same number of times, in a different order. The options decide what counts: by default case, spaces and punctuation are ignored, so Dormitory and Dirty room match, while accents are kept, so café and face do not. A text compared with itself is flagged as identical, since an anagram must be a rearrangement. The letter table shows any difference in red. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

About the Anagram Checker

Two texts are anagrams when they use exactly the same letters the same number of times in a different order, such as listen and silent, or Dormitory and Dirty room. The checker counts the letters in each text and compares the counts, so it also says which letters are extra or missing when the answer is no. The options decide what is counted. By default case, spaces and punctuation are ignored, so a phrase matches a phrase, while accents are kept, so cafe with an accent is not an anagram of face. Turn on Ignore accents to match them. Digits count as characters, and letters outside the basic alphabet are handled as whole characters. A text that is the same as the other once the options are applied is shown as identical, because an anagram has to be a rearrangement. The checker compares letters only. It does not check that the result is a real word. The list mode splits the text at line breaks, commas and semicolons, ignores repeated words and shows each group of two or more, largest first. Nothing is uploaded.

What is an anagram?▾

An anagram is a word or phrase made by rearranging all the letters of another, using each letter exactly once. Listen and silent are anagrams, and so are Astronomer and Moon starer.

Do spaces, punctuation and capital letters matter?▾

Not by default. Most anagrams of phrases ignore them, so Dormitory and Dirty room match. You can switch each option off if you want a stricter test.

Do accented letters count as different?▾

Yes by default, so cafe with an accent on the e does not match face. Tick Ignore accents to treat an accented letter as its plain form.

Can it find anagrams in a list of words?▾

Yes. Choose Find anagrams in a list, paste your words one per line or separated by commas, and the tool groups the words that are anagrams of each other. It does not look words up in a dictionary, so it only finds anagrams among the words you give it.

Does it check that the anagram is a real word?▾

No. It compares the letters of the two texts you enter. Whether a rearrangement is a meaningful word or phrase is for you to judge. Your text is not uploaded.
