Repeated Word Finder

Paste your text and every word that is repeated right after itself is highlighted with its line and column, so a typo such as "the the" cannot hide. Remove all the doubled words in one click, undo it if you change your mind, or widen the search to catch a word used again within a few words.

We went to the the market on Saturday. It was was crowded, and the stalls sold fresh bread, fresh fruit and flowers. Later we sat down down by the river. The report was a long report, and the manager asked for another report by Friday.

  • the on line 1, column 16, right after itself
  • was on line 1, column 47, right after itself
  • down on line 2, column 19, right after itself

Not every repeat is a mistake: phrases such as “had had” and “that that” can be correct, and the second copy is only the one to review. Removing works on words that sit right after themselves, never on the wider search.

About the Repeated Word Finder

A doubled word is one of the easiest mistakes to type and the hardest to see, because the eye reads past the second copy. This tool finds a word that follows itself with only spaces or line breaks between the two copies, so "the the" and a "the" at the end of one line followed by "the" at the start of the next are both caught, while "no, no" and "that. That" are not, because punctuation separates them. Matching ignores capital letters by default, so "The the" counts, and you can turn that off or ignore numbers, which helps with page numbers and tables. Accented letters and other scripts count as letters, and an apostrophe stays inside a word, so "don't don't" is one repeated word. The wider search finds the same word again within 3, 5 or 10 words, such as "report" twice in a short sentence, and it skips short words and very common ones, because "the" and "and" always repeat nearby and would only add noise. Removing deletes the second copy and the space after it, or the space before it at the end of a line, and works only on the doubled words, never on the wider search. Not every repeat is wrong. Phrases such as "had had" and "that that" can be correct English, so the tool shows the second copy for you to review, and the Undo button restores the text before the removal. Nothing you paste leaves your browser.

How do I find repeated words in a document?▾

Paste the text into the tool and every word that follows itself is highlighted with its line and column. Use the wider setting to also find a word used again within a few words.

Are repeated words always mistakes?▾

No. "Had had" and "that that" can be correct, and so can "very, very" with a comma. The tool shows each repeat so you can decide, and it ignores pairs that are separated by punctuation.

Does it find repeats across a line break?▾

Yes. If a word ends one line and the same word starts the next, it is counted as a repeat, which is how many doubled words appear in copied text or wrapped lines.

Can I find words that are used too often, not just repeated?▾

Use the Word Frequency Counter for that. It counts how often every word appears across the whole text, while this tool looks for words repeated close together.
