Palindrome Checker

Type a word, phrase or number to see whether it reads the same forward and backward. The checker ignores case, spaces and punctuation by default, so a phrase such as A man, a plan, a canal: Panama passes, and you can turn each option off for a stricter test. When the answer is no, it shows the first place where the text differs from its mirror image. Everything runs in your browser.

A palindrome reads the same forward and backward. For phrases the usual rule is to ignore case, spaces and punctuation, which is the default here, so "A man, a plan, a canal: Panama" counts. Turn the options off to apply a stricter rule. Numbers work too, such as 12321. The check compares whole characters, so emoji and accented letters are not split. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

About the Palindrome Checker

A palindrome reads the same in both directions. Single words such as racecar and level qualify, and so do numbers such as 12321. For phrases the usual rule is to look only at the letters and digits, so punctuation, spaces and capital letters are ignored, which is the default here. With the options off, the check is literal, and a phrase with a space or comma is a palindrome only if those characters are mirrored too. The checker compares whole characters, so an emoji or an accented letter is never split in half, and the Ignore accents option lets an accented letter match its plain form. When the text is not a palindrome, it reports the first character that does not match its mirror, such as character 3 against its mirror character. It also shows the compared text, the reversed text and the longest palindrome found inside the text, which is how you find a hidden one like racecar inside xracecarx. A single character is a palindrome, and an empty text is reported as having nothing to compare. The longest-palindrome search covers texts up to 5,000 characters. Nothing is uploaded.

What is a palindrome?▾

It is a word, phrase or number that reads the same forward and backward, such as racecar, level, 12321 or the phrase Never odd or even.

Do spaces and punctuation count when checking a phrase?▾

By convention they do not. Only the letters and digits are compared, so A man, a plan, a canal: Panama is a palindrome. If you turn the options off, the spaces and commas have to be mirrored as well.

Can a number be a palindrome?▾

Yes. 121, 1331 and 12321 read the same both ways, and every single digit does too. The checker treats digits like letters.

Is a single letter a palindrome?▾

Yes, a single character reads the same in both directions, so it counts. An empty text has nothing to compare, so the tool does not call it a palindrome.

What does the longest palindrome inside the text mean?▾

It is the longest stretch of the text that is itself a palindrome. In xracecarx the whole text is one, but in abcracecarxyz it finds racecar. It is useful for spotting a palindrome hidden inside longer text.
