Format ConversionAbout the Hyperlink Generator
A hyperlink maker fills in a template. In HTML a link is an a element with an href attribute, with the link text between the tags. In Markdown it is the text in square brackets followed by the address in round brackets, with an optional title in quotes. BBCode, used by many forums, writes it as [url=address]text[/url]. This tool writes all three from one address, and it fixes the things that would otherwise break the link: it adds https:// when the address has none, writes spaces as %20, escapes the ampersand as & in the HTML, and escapes brackets, asterisks and underscores in the Markdown. Addresses that start with javascript:, data: or vbscript: are refused. The new tab, rel and download settings exist only in HTML, so the Markdown and BBCode outputs leave them out and the tool tells you so. Browsers treat target="_blank" as rel="noopener" already, so the tool does not add it. The rel values nofollow, sponsored and ugc are the ones Google documents for qualifying outbound links, and they can be combined. The email tab follows RFC 6068: the address, then a question mark and the cc, bcc, subject and body fields joined by ampersands, with spaces written as %20 and line breaks as %0D%0A. The list tab turns one address per line into one link per line, and a line written as Link text | address sets its own text. The tool also warns about link text such as click here, which says nothing when it is read out of context. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
How do I make a hyperlink in HTML?▾
Put the address in the href attribute of an a element and the link text between the opening and closing tags. Type the address here and copy the HTML output.
How do I make a link open in a new tab?▾
Tick Open in a new tab. The tool adds target="_blank" to the HTML. Browsers treat that as rel="noopener" already, and the tool can add (opens in new tab) to the link text so readers know what to expect.
What do nofollow, sponsored and ugc mean?▾
They are rel values that Google documents for qualifying outbound links. Sponsored marks ads and paid placements, ugc marks links in comments and forum posts, and nofollow is the general choice when neither fits. You can combine them.
How do I make an email link with a subject?▾
Use the email tab. Enter the address with an optional subject and message, and the tool writes a mailto link with the subject and message percent-encoded, so spaces, ampersands and line breaks are safe.
Why does the Markdown output leave out my new tab setting?▾
Markdown and BBCode have no syntax for target, rel or download. Only the HTML output carries them. CommonMark allows raw HTML, so you can paste the HTML link into a Markdown file, though some sites strip it.
