Case & FormattingAbout the UTM Link Builder
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are five standardized query string keys appended to URLs to track marketing effectiveness across digital channels. When a user clicks a UTM-tagged link, analytics systems parse the utm_source (where traffic originates, e.g. newsletter), utm_medium (marketing channel, e.g. email), utm_campaign (specific promotion, e.g. summer_sale), utm_term (paid keywords), and utm_content (A/B testing variant or CTA element). Using consistent lowercase casing and hyphenation in UTM parameters prevents fragmented reporting in Google Analytics. This builder automatically URL-encodes special characters, handles existing URL query strings correctly, and provides instant copy functionality.
What are the required UTM parameters?▾
The three essential parameters are utm_source (e.g. google, newsletter), utm_medium (e.g. cpc, email, social), and utm_campaign (e.g. spring_launch). utm_term and utm_content are optional.
Are UTM parameters case-sensitive in Google Analytics?▾
Yes! Google Analytics treats "Email", "email", and "EMAIL" as three separate marketing mediums. Best practice is to use all-lowercase letters and hyphens or underscores for spaces.
How does the builder handle URLs that already have query parameters?▾
If your base URL already contains a question mark (e.g. https://site.com/page?id=123), the builder automatically attaches UTM parameters using ampersands (&) rather than introducing a second question mark.
